Python package name generator

Name your Python package

PyPI treats names case-insensitively and considers hyphens, underscores and dots equivalent, so the name you want may already be taken in a form you didn't check. Vocari checks PyPI, npm, GitHub and the domain for every candidate.

What makes a good name here

  • Keep the install and import names the same

scikit-learn imports as sklearn and beautifulsoup4 as bs4. It works, but it confuses every new user. Match them if you can.

  • Normalization matters

PyPI normalizes names, so My_Package, my-package and my.package are the same project.

  • Lowercase and short

PEP 8 asks for short, all-lowercase module names. requests and pandas are good models.

  • Check conda-forge too

If your users are in data science, a conda-forge package with the same name will confuse installs.

Names that got it right

  • requestsA plain English word that says exactly what the library sends.
  • pandasDerived from "panel data", and easy to remember as an animal.
  • NumPyNumeric Python, shortened into something you can say.
  • PydanticA pun on pedantic, which is exactly what strict validation is.

What Vocari checks for you

Every suggestion already has a domain you can register. Open the handles & trademarks panel on any name to check the rest:

  • PyPI (normalized)
  • GitHub
  • npm (for JS bindings)
  • Domain for docs

Questions

Are PyPI names case-sensitive?
No. PyPI normalizes names by lowercasing them and treating runs of hyphens, underscores and dots as the same, so check every variant.
